Fairtrade continues to attract consumers in France
2024-05-03
Cocoa, bananas, and coffee represent the bulk of sales for the Fairtrade/Max Havelaar label, affixed in France on about 85% of Fairtrade products coming from Southern countries. Fairtrade is resilient. Driven by cocoa and bananas, the turnover of Fairtrade/Max Havelaar labelled products increased by 4% in 2023 in France, according to the certifying body.
However, the increase is lower than in 2023, when the sector grew by 7% over a year. Sales of labelled bananas grew in value (+11%) and volume (+0.5%), notable thanks to the "highlighting" of the product by certain brands, according to Blaise Desbordes.y Max Havelaar organisation, which labels products from 4,600 French farmers by guaranteeing them a "fair remuneration", also indicated that sales under its logo had climbed in 2023 by 14% to reach 520 million euros, notably due to an increase in the number of referenced products. French products labelled "fair trade" have multiplied in France in recent years, driven by solid consumer expectations. Requirements that no longer only concern products manufactured in emerging countries.
