Mexico could export bananas by rail to the U.S.

Adrián Prats, president of the National Banana Product System Committee, said that Mexican banana producers are enthusiastic about this project because it will reduce freight costs and allow the container to reach its destination directly. Prats Leal said that the Interoceanic Train passing through Teapa would enable them to send the fruit from Tabasco to the United States. "We will be able to enter the United States perfectly; the fruit can be loaded onto a wagon or container without being lowered anywhere, all the way to Los Angeles, California," the producer exemplified.

The producer recalled that in 2023, the Sultana de la Sierra harvest was 250 thousand tons of bananas, and 40 per cent of the bananas were exported to Europe and Asia. He also stated that Tabasco contributes 25.8 per cent of the total bananas consumed in the country. Today, more is exported to Europe and Asia than to the United States. Still, the train opens the possibility of reaching the North American market by connecting Teapa directly with Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, which is precisely along with Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, one of the ports contemplated by the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus. "It opens a good market niche for us because freight will be better and cheaper; it would leave directly through Teapa," said Prat.
