Miniature Pineapples: A Perfect Treat for One

2024-04-05

Del Monte, a global produce producer and distributor, has introduced a pineapple that is just the right size for one person. Inspired by the pulse pineapples common in Thailand, this new product is designed with individual consumers in mind.

In March, Del Monte announced the launch of the Precious Honeyglow pineapple, a "personal-sized" fruit that weighs only 1.5 to 2 pounds, about half the size of an average pineapple.

Melissa Mackay, Fresh Del Monte's Vice President of Marketing for North America, stated in a press release, "As the world's leading producer of fresh pineapples, Del Monte offers a wide range of options to cater to consumer preferences, whether it's a sweeter taste, sustainability benefits, or a versatile range of sizes. Our new Precious Honeyglow provides all the features people love about Del Monte Honeyglow pineapples, such as its extra sweet taste and unique color, in a compact single-serving size."

Del Monte says this product has a "distinctly sweeter taste" than traditional pineapples.

It is cultivated at speciality farms in Costa Rica, where it is allowed to "mature and ripen naturally on the plant for a few extra days," resulting in an extra-sweet taste and a radiant golden hue.

In addition to offering a delightful, sweet treat, Del Monte is also marketing this product as a solution to reduce food waste. The company noted in its release that single-person households are increasing in the U.S., with more than 28% of American households now occupied by one person. This trend contributes to more incredible food waste due to spoilage. Del Monte's internal surveys show that single-person households are significantly less likely to prefer full-size whole pineapples to avoid wasting fruit.

Del Monte also offers other unique fruit options, including Pinkglow, a variety of pink pineapples that are as enjoyable to cut into as they are to eat. The single-serve Precious Honeyglow pineapple is available now and throughout the year at Melissa's Produce.
