Peru: Decline in agricultural exports in Piura
2024-03-29
Javier Bereche, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Piura (CAMCO), expressed his concern about the considerable decrease in exports of grapes, mangoes, bananas, and coffee, among other products. In response to this situation, he asked the Executive and the Congress of the Republic to intervene to rescue this sector, proposing the rescheduling of the terms of the loans due to farmers, the activation of the Reactiva credits and the implementation of the Agrarian Development Law.
Bereche explained that the intense rains caused by the El Niño phenomenon affected the flowering and production of various fruit plants. "Exports have declined. The El Niño phenomenon altered the temperature of the sea last year, affecting some marine species and the flowering of certain trees such as mangoes, grapes, blueberries, bananas, avocados, and cotton, among others," he said. He added that although there were exports last year, total production was not achieved. Bereche provided details on the figures for exports that were affected in the Piura region.
He mentioned that exports of mango and organic bananas decreased by -13.6%, among other products. Faced with this situation, he made an urgent appeal. "As a business association that includes the agricultural sector of Piura, we call on the Minister of Agriculture, the Minister of Economy and Finance and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) to intervene in this agricultural sector, which has been the most affected in the last 26 years."
