Peru: Banana Producers Request Regional Program for Tumbes

2024-03-22

Banana producers in the Tumbes Valley are petitioning the Regional Governor, Segismundo Cruces Ordinola, to implement the regional banana program. Celestino Marchán Sanjinez, president of the Technical Board of the Productive Chain, has sent a letter to Congressman Héctor Ventura requesting his intervention to comply with this legal norm of regional scope that would benefit banana producers and the regional economy.

Marchán says ten of the thirteen districts of Tumbes are banana producers. However, since the publication of the regional ordinance, no action has been taken to implement it. As a result, banana production areas have shrunk to 70% of what they were in the 1990s. The agricultural leader points out that the cost of production of a thousand bananas is 280 soles, but currently, they are sold at 80 soles. Marchán insists that no action has been taken since the publication of the regional ordinance, which has led to a reduction in banana production areas.
