Chiquita’s Commitment to Strengthening Biodiversity in Costa Rica

Chiquita, a leading player in the banana industry, has made a significant pledge to extend its protection efforts for the Nogal Reserve in Costa Rica. This commitment, which marks two decades of dedicated conservation work, is not merely about preserving a tract of land; it’s a testament to a vision that intricately links the fate of biodiversity with our own survival. The Nogal Reserve, a vibrant oasis of biodiversity nestled between the Sucio River and a sprawling banana plantation, has evolved over the last 20 years into a crucial wildlife corridor. This 257-acre sanctuary connects disparate forest fragments and provides a refuge for an impressive array of over 720 plant and 330 animal species. Chiquita’s recent pledge to extend its protection for another decade under a government executive decree is a bold affirmation of its commitment to the environment and sets a benchmark for sustainable practices in the banana industry.

Peter Stedman, Chiquita’s Director of Sustainability, asserts that this move is part of a wider strategy to incorporate environmental consciousness into every aspect of their operations. “Our efforts in the Nogal Reserve are a clear reflection of our unwavering commitment to leading the charge in biodiversity conservation,” Stedman elaborates. This commitment is further strengthened by collaborations with the German Society for International Cooperation, the Costa Rican government, the Rainforest Alliance, and select clients, all working together to foster a sustainable future for the banana industry.

Chiquita’s conservation initiatives reach beyond the confines of the Nogal Reserve. The company’s ‘Behind the Blue Sticker’ approach and its ‘30BY30’ Carbon Reduction Program form part of a holistic strategy to minimize environmental impact from farm to table. These initiatives aim to promote sustainable agriculture, reduce carbon emissions, and involve local communities in environmental education and conservation activities.
