2023-12-29
In January-November, Uzbekistan imported approximately 120,000 tons of bananas valued at $85.2 million, according to preliminary data from the Statistics Agency.
The primary sources of banana imports during this period were:
- Ecuador, supplying 117.5 thousand tons;
- Turkey, contributing 639 tons;
- China, providing 474 tons;
- Kazakhstan, with 375 tons;
- Georgia, contributing 231 tons.
Additionally, according to a decree of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, zero duties will be applied on imports of 37 groups of food, including bananas, and they have been extended until January 1, 2025.
The document published in the national legislative database explained that this was done "to bolster the purchasing power of the local population, to ensure that its needs in staple food and consumer products are met, and to curb the inflation rate."
Under the decree, the list includes several products like bananas, citrus fruit, onions, some vegetables, coffee, and tea.
Zero duties on specific groups of goods were introduced in Uzbekistan in May 2022, and they were extended in March 2023 until January 1, 2024, to stabilize prices for foodstuffs imported into the country.
