Small Banana Growers of Martinique Suspend Mobilization

2023-12-22

Small banana producers have announced the suspension of their mobilisation. An agreement with the management of the Banamart banana group was reached, although negotiations continue.

The blockades erected in front of the Banamart packing plant in Ducos since December 18 have been lifted.

After lengthy negotiations, small banana growers and the board of directors of the banana group reached an agreement on the aid allocated to producers.

With this progress, the farmers say they want to "limit double standards within the group."

We have common ground, which allows us to remove the roadblocks, but the negotiations and discussions continue. We obtained €101.50 instead of €50 per tonne with the agreement. So, the growers will be able to pay their debts to end the year in good condition. That's not what we asked for. We asked for the total amount, which was €129, but we can settle for €101. We must work for 2024 and see what conditions we start the year in, Louis-Félix Glorianne, representative of small producers, said.

Having not satisfied all their demands, the small producers intend to continue negotiations with Banamart, which "is committed to continuing discussions, meetings with the State, State services, and the Community,to support planters in difficulty."
