Argentina: Obstacles to Bolivian Banana Imports Remain
2023-12-15
The vice president of the Agricultural Chamber of Cochabamba, Rolando Morales, reported that several vehicles transporting bananas from the Tropics could not enter Argentina due to the elimination of the Import System of the Argentine Republic (SIRA).
"(The new Argentine government) has decided to eliminate the SIRA and has opened the possibility that the negotiations will be between importers and exporters, of course, as long as they comply with the sanitary measures. It has also aggravated a tax on the Argentine importer.
The Argentine government's measures still need to be regulated, and that causes uncertainty about when banana growers will be able to deliver the cargo to Argentine importers.
"That is why at this time we still have several trucks stranded at the Yacuiba border, because bananas are not being able to enter due to the lack of regulations. These requests have been authorised by the previous government last week, they are within the totally legal framework," said the businessman.
Another sector concern is the payment of the debt left by the previous Argentine government to the banana growers.
So far, there is a debt of more than $10 million. The mechanism of the previous government was for private importers to request payment through the Central Bank of Argentina. The new provision will direct the relationship between the importer and the exporter.
