Dominican Government Supports Recovery of the Banana Sector

2023-12-15

The Dominican Ministry of Agriculture provided some 140 million pesos ($2.5 million) for its recovery. Hit by the heavy rains that fell over practically the entire national territory last November, the amount granted to the Association of Banana Producers will be used to revive this vital sector at the national level.

To that end, the Minister of Agriculture, Limber Cruz, presented a check for 70 million pesos (1,250,000 dollars) to the Association and said a second fraction would be granted for a similar amount.

He explained that of those last 70 million, 52 million will be destined for purchases of inputs and fertilisers through the Northwest Regional Office of this Ministry. The administrator of the Agricultural Bank, Fernando Durán, reported that that entity had restructured about 60 per cent of the debts of the producers affected by the rains and floods of November.

In this sense, he added that more than 1,800 million pesos (31,000 dollars) have been allocated in loans to banana growers.
