The pineapple producer Anexco, which belongs to the fruit importer Fyffes, has opened its health centre in Costa Rica. It is intended to ensure primary medical care for employees and their families, as Fyffes' Latin America boss, Alasdair Macleod, explains. In addition to areas for occupational safety and health promotion, the new building also houses a dining room, several treatment rooms and an operating room for minor surgical procedures.

For example, Macleod said that Anexco's continued commitment to safety and well-being had reduced the farm's accident rate by 46 per cent over the past five years. German consumers attach great importance to companies living up to their social responsibility, adds Oliver Knop, General Manager of Fyffes in Germany. "With extensive investments in occupational safety and health, Fyffes is consistently continuing its commitment to the issues of sustainability and the promotion of human rights."
