Colombia: $63,000 Million to Address El Niño Phenomenon

2023-12-01

According to Netafim, an agricultural technology company, Colombia has 40,000 million arable hectares, and today, 5.3 million are exploited, representing 13% of the planted area in the country. Given its obvious importance for food security, and with the imminent arrival of El Niño, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, headed by its minister Jhenifer Mojica, has allocated $63,000 million for farmers who want to make improvements or build irrigation and drainage systems, and thus foresee declines in their production.

These resources will leverage $300,000 million of productive investments in water, irrigation, and mechanization processes, and it is estimated that more than 5,000 peasant families throughout the national territory will benefit.

This economic support aims to develop investments such as efficient irrigation systems, drainage canals, and agricultural infrastructure in production systems, a key benefit considering that agriculture is one of the activities that consumes the most water each year, using 70% of the total existing water sources.
