Ecuador: Work on Pier 6 in Puerto Bolívar Nears Completion

2023-11-24

The Ministry of Transport and Public Works of Ecuador reported that the construction work of Pier 6 of Puerto Bolívar is close to completion. This after announcing an advance of 9,5%.

What has been achieved to date includes an investment of USD 180,700,000, consisting of the materialisation of a container yard, refrigeration warehouse and access roads.

In this way, Pier 6 will be able to "receive larger vessels, allow access to new shipping lines, and diversify export and import cargo," according to the Ecuadorian ministry.

The works are being carried out based on the assignment of plot 1A to the concessionaire Yilport Terminal Operations S.A. (Yilportecu) in an agreement signed with the Port Authority of Puerto Bolívar (APPB).

The agreement between APPB and Yilportecu signed three years ago considered the delivery of 11 hectares of land for constructing the new dock, improving the service of Super Post Panamax vessels, thus diversifying new export lines to the world.

They started the work at the end of March 2021, which materialised with placing the first pile of Pier 6. In addition, in October of that same year, the Puerto Bolívar Maritime Terminal received 120 steel foundation pipes to construct the Marginal Dock: Berth No. 6.

It is worth mentioning that, in August 2022, the contractor Consorcio PBO, in charge of the construction of Pier 6, held a ceremony to commemorate having reached 1 million hours of work without accidents and loss of time.

It is also contemplated that in November 2023, a new batch of STS cranes and one of the RTG types will arrive at the Puerto Bolívar terminal.
