Argentina Pays 30% of Its Debt to Bolivian Banana Growers

2023-11-24

Bolivia's Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade, Benjamín Blanco, announced the lifting of the blockade on the Yacuiba international bridge, on the border with Argentina, after receiving a first payment of 30% of the $US 12 million owed by that country to Bolivian banana producers.

According to the agreements reached, Argentina will make an additional disbursement of 30% on November 24. As of November 28, daily payments of USD 1 million will be made until the total amount owed is completed. This measure will allow Bolivian banana producers to resume exports to Argentina.

According to Deputy Minister Blanco, with the regularisation of payments and lifting the blockade, banana exports from Bolivia to Argentina are expected to resume next week.

Banana exports to Argentina make up 90% of transactions, while the remaining 10% goes to Chile and Peru, generating revenues exceeding USD 60 million. In order not to depend almost exclusively on the Argentinian market, the CAC announced its intention to explore new markets.
