Colombia: Banana Farms Flooded in Magdalena
2023-11-10
Heavy rains in the upper part of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the municipality of Zona Bananera caused the water level to rise, seriously affecting small banana and palm producers.
José Francisco Zúñiga, Executive President of the Association of Banana Growers of Magdalena and La Guajira (Asbama), said: "From Asbama, we call on the authorities of the department, mayor's office and governor's office to declare an emergency. The situation in the municipality of Zona Bananera is very difficult, due to the severe weather events that have occurred in recent days. There is population, farms, and roads under water," he added.
The banana plantations of the area were under water for around twelve hours, and no significant damages were expected to the farms. Still, volumes of water were high in relatively few days, and the effects of the soil saturation, according to local farmers, remain to be seen.
