Costa Rica: Banana Sector Strengthens Efforts to Prevent Malaria

2026-10-02

Costa Rican banana producers and exporters are working with the Ministry of Health to prevent malaria. They are making sure health staff can get the resources they need for sampling, diagnosis and timely treatment.

The National Chamber of Agriculture and Agribusiness (CNAA) supports initiatives led by the National Chamber of Banana Growers (Canaba) to prevent, control and eradicate malaria. These efforts are coordinated with the Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) to promote surveillance, prevention and care in communities and workplaces. Banana companies will let Ministry staff enter their facilities to collect samples, diagnose cases and provide treatment.

"We are facilitating access for banana companies, allowing the Ministry to conduct sampling, diagnosis, and early treatment for those who need medical intervention," said Canaba president Luis Umaña Aguiar. CNAA executive director Martín Calderón Chaves said the sector aims to support health authorities and strengthen prevention among workers, their families and nearby communities. CNAA data show that by week 30 of 2026, Costa Rica had reported 68 malaria cases:

20 locally transmitted

36 imported, including six relapses

12 under investigation

Local transmission stayed below 2023 and 2024 levels, but total cases rose compared with the same period in 2025. CNAA, Canaba and the Ministry of Health will meet again in November to assess progress and decide next steps.
