Evergreen Marine Expands IoT-Enabled Reefer Fleet

2026-10-02

Evergreen Marine showcased its smart cold chain capabilities at Asia Fruit Logistica 2026, highlighting an expanded fleet of about 58,000 refrigerated containers equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) technology. This technology transmits real-time data regarding location, temperature, humidity, and operational status. The system issues automatic alerts for temperature deviations, unauthorised door openings, or equipment malfunctions, which Evergreen states shifts cold chain oversight from after-the-fact inspections to real-time exception detection.

Additionally, the company presented a predictive maintenance program that utilises big data analytics and remote diagnostics to identify potential faults before they lead to breakdowns. This initiative aims to transition reefer management from reactive repairs to proactive prevention, thereby reducing disruptions during long ocean transits.

For temperature-sensitive produce such as bananas, avocados, and grapes, Evergreen promoted its Controlled Atmosphere reefer service, which regulates oxygen and carbon dioxide levels inside containers to slow down ripening, helping preserve cargo quality over long distances and extending the selling windows in distant markets.

Sustainability was also emphasised, with newer reefer units increasingly equipped with high-efficiency variable-speed compressors that adjust cooling to actual demand and lower energy consumption. The company linked reduced spoilage directly to less food waste and lower associated emissions. An Evergreen representative said a fresh produce supply chain involves more than transporting cargo from origin to market; it requires maintaining consistent product quality throughout a lengthy ocean journey. The company plans to continue integrating its global network with smart reefers, controlled atmosphere technology, real-time monitoring, and predictive maintenance to help customers reduce cargo loss and strengthen supply chain resilience.
