Ecuador eyes tariff cuts with Morocco
2026-05-01
Ecuador is working to reduce trade barriers with Morocco, specifically targeting tariffs of up to 60% that limit exports like bananas, cocoa, and flowers. This initiative aims to help local businesses diversify their international markets. Recently, a delegation of 10 Ecuadorian companies began discussions with Moroccan counterparts to expand exports of agricultural and processed food products and to negotiate a gradual reduction in import duties. This follows a memorandum of understanding signed in January by private sector organisations from both countries.
Ecuador seeks to enhance the competitiveness of products such as bananas, cocoa derivatives, and roses, while Morocco is interested in importing agricultural fertilisers. Despite modest trade flows, Ecuador's non-oil exports reached $56 million in 2025, a 34% increase over the previous year, driven primarily by aquaculture. Although imports from Morocco to Ecuador dropped by 13% in 2025, the trade relationship is seen as complementary, with both sides working towards tangible tariff reductions to strengthen bilateral trade and reduce reliance on traditional markets.
