Canary Islands: La Palma improves irrigation for plátano

2026-05-01

The island of La Palma has significantly enhanced its irrigation capacity for agriculture. The Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo have implemented five key projects to improve the island's hydraulic network, increasing water availability by 1.5 million cubic meters per year.

One notable initiative involves modernising the Hermosilla-Tajuya irrigation network in El Paso, benefiting the local irrigation community and specifically supporting banana cultivation across 71 hectares. Additionally, the improvement efforts in Breña Alta, Breña Baja, Mazo, and Fuencaliente focus on optimising banana irrigation.

A mobile desalination plant has also been commissioned to produce 2,500 cubic meters of agricultural water daily, further supporting banana farming on the island. Furthermore, plans for the General Study of Irrigation Infrastructures in San Andrés y Sauces are underway to enhance water efficiency in areas where bananas and avocados thrive.
