UK: Startup Secures €91.3 Million for Gene-Edited Bananas

2026-03-20

Tropic, a Norwich-based AgTech startup specialising in gene-edited tropical crops, has completed an oversubscribed Series C funding round, raising €91.3 million (approximately $105 million). This funding will accelerate the global expansion of its banana and rice portfolios, as well as its pipeline of climate-resilient crops.

The funding round was co-led by Forbion's Bioeconomy Fund and Corteva's Corteva Catalyst investment platform. Additional participants included Just Climate, IQ Capital, ABN Amro, Invest International, and existing investors such as Temasek and Five Seasons Ventures. As part of the agreement, key individuals will be joining Tropic's Board of Directors.

Gilad Gershon, CEO of Tropic, stated, "This funding endorses our team's ability to deliver breakthrough products that enhance food security and sustainability. With two banana varieties already on the market and demand outstripping supply, this investment will help us scale production and rapidly expand into new crops." Founded in late 2016, Tropic is dedicated to developing healthier, more resilient tropical crops through its proprietary GEiGS® platform and gene-editing technologies, such as CRISPR. The company has achieved significant milestones, including the launch of new banana varieties, one of which—a non-browning banana—was recognised by TIME Magazine as one of its Best Inventions of 2025. With the new funding, Tropic plans to enhance its production capabilities, strengthen global supply chains, and expand its rice portfolio while addressing crop diseases, such as Panama Disease and Black Sigatoka.
