CMA CGM Fiordland Marks Historic Visit to New Puerto Antioquia
2026-02-20
CMA CGM's Fiordland has become the first large container vessel to dock at Puerto Antioquia, Colombia's newly operational multipurpose port in Turbo, Antioquia. This milestone highlights the port's capability to accommodate post-Panamax ships, enhancing container logistics networks across Latin America and potentially improving transhipment routes for Indian exporters through connections to the Panama Canal. Puerto Antioquia has been operational since early February 2026 and features a 1,340-meter quay, a draft of 16.5 meters, and the capacity to handle New Panamax vessels with a capacity of up to 14,000 TEU. Its location is more advantageous for Colombia's production hubs compared to traditional Caribbean ports.
The Fiordland, with a capacity of 10,888 TEU, successfully docked at the port, demonstrating the terminal's advanced gantry cranes, viaduct system, and automated cargo-handling capabilities for container, bulk, and Ro-Ro traffic.
Being 350 km closer to Medellín and the coffee-producing regions, the port significantly reduces transit times by up to 47%, thereby streamlining exports such as bananas and imports. It also enhances efficiency for Asia-Europe routes via the Panama Canal.
For India's maritime sector, Puerto Antioquia offers optimised pathways for bilateral trade with Colombia, facilitating faster container transit from Mumbai and Chennai to South American markets.
