Colombian bananas to be shipped to China with Cosco

Colombian producers are set to export cocoa, coffee, and bananas to China following agreements established in Shanghai. China is expected to begin importing 80,000 tons of coffee, 15,000 tons of bananas, and 10,000 tons of cocoa annually. These figures are anticipated to solidify thanks to partnerships formed after Colombia joined the Belt and Road Initiative, China's global trade and infrastructure strategy.
During the China International Import Expo in Shanghai, one of the world's most significant trade events, Chinese business leaders expressed a growing interest in Colombian agricultural products. Discussions at the event pave the way for Colombia to start exporting substantial quantities of coffee, cocoa, and bananas to China beginning in 2026.
Expectations are high. César Pachón, president of the Rural Development Agency, believes that China could begin importing these volumes annually, supported by the new trade alliances stemming from Colombia's participation in the Belt and Road Initiative. Pachón emphasised the importance of positioning Colombia as a preferred supplier: "Today, they're importing coffee from more than seven countries, but we tell them: if you want the best coffee in the world, you have to get it from Colombia," he stated.
However, the interest extends beyond coffee. Pachón noted that negotiations are also advancing for cocoa and bananas. "There are many buyers of cocoa and fruit. In the case of bananas, one company is requesting 200 containers, and for cocoa, they're asking for around 10,000 tons. We're currently working out the terms, prices, quantities, delivery times, and locations," he explained.
The export plan is bolstered by an agreement with Cosco Shipping, China's largest shipping company, which will establish a direct maritime route between the two countries. This initiative will reduce logistical times and enhance the competitiveness of Colombia's agricultural export sector.
