Maersk Forecasts 4% Global Container Growth in 2025

2025-11-14

Shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk reported solid financial results for the third quarter of 2025, despite experiencing decreased profitability due to ongoing pressure on ocean freight rates. Revenue for the third quarter fell by 9.9% year-on-year to $14.2 billion, with EBITDA dropping to $2.7 billion from $4.8 billion. The revenue decline was mainly attributed to the Ocean segment, which saw an 18% drop in revenue due to a 31% decline in loaded freight rates.

Despite these challenges, Maersk has revised its forecast for global container volumes, now expecting 4% growth in 2025, up from the previous range of 2% to 4%. The company reported that global container demand grew by 3% to 5% in the third quarter, powered by strong exports from Far East Asia and solid imports into Europe, Africa, and Latin America. However, North American volumes, particularly from China to the U.S., contracted.

CEO Vincent Clerc affirmed that the company's performance demonstrates its execution capabilities, noting that the new East-West network has improved ocean performance with enhanced reliability, higher volumes, and lower costs. Additionally, Maersk indicated that disruptions in the Red Sea are expected to continue and that transit will only resume once a viable, long-term security solution is established.
