Sun Meijun, Minister of China's General Administration of Customs, and Vladimir Cuno, Minister of Agricultural Development and Irrigation of Peru, have announced the signing of phytosanitary protocols for the export of fresh bananas and pomegranates to the People's Republic of China. Minister Cuno and Minister Sun led the signing ceremony. According to the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), Peru exported 148,000 tons of bananas and 28,000 tons of pomegranates to various international markets last year. The Piura region accounts for 85% of the country's banana production, while Ica leads in both pomegranate production and exports, making up 75% of the national total.
Peru's agricultural authority highlighted that these agreements would strengthen agri-food cooperation between Peru and China, which is home to over 1.4 billion consumers with a growing demand for high-quality food products. During the signing ceremony, Cuno, who took office in mid-October, replacing Ángel Manero, reaffirmed the Transitional and Reconciliation Government's commitment to revitalising agriculture and expanding commercial opportunities for Peruvian products in global markets. His goal is to integrate small-scale farmers into the export chain further.
"China's engagement with Peru is very positive, and we will see results soon," he stated. "We have a wide variety of products that are ready for export," Cuno explained. The signing of the protocol was the result of a thorough technical process involving Peru's National Agrarian Health Service (SENASA) and China's General Administration of Customs, which included years of collaborative work and sanitary evaluations. During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding on sanitary and phytosanitary matters was also signed, reinforcing technical and agri-food cooperation between the two economies.
