Ecuador presents a revolutionary solution against black Sigatoka
2025-09-12
Ecuador has introduced an innovative solution to combat Black Sigatoka, a persistent challenge affecting one of its main export products: bananas. This disease significantly impacts the quality of the fruit and the profitability of producers. BASF, a company dedicated to agricultural innovation and sustainability, has developed a new solution that combines effective pest control with a lower environmental impact, marking a significant advancement in the responsible management of this vital crop.
Introducing Vitelyum®, a fungicide that utilises Revysol® technology (mefentrifluconazole), which is the first Isopropanol-Azole molecule available on the market. This fungicide adapts flexibly to the action site of the fungus, even in situations where other products may become ineffective. This technological advancement offers highly effective preventive and curative control, greater residual efficacy, and a favourable ecotoxicological profile. As a result, it promotes healthier plantations, higher-quality fruits, and reduces cultural tasks, such as leaf removal.
Beyond its technical effectiveness, Vitelyum® is part of BASF's comprehensive health program, "Sanimax," which is a sustainable management strategy that minimises the number of application cycles and promotes the conservation of natural resources. This initiative not only addresses the need to maintain the competitiveness of Ecuadorian bananas in international markets but also aligns with the growing demand for agricultural practices that meet the highest environmental standards.
"Our priority is to offer tools that blend innovation with sustainability, helping producers tackle diseases like black Sigatoka while adhering to strict environmental regulations. Vitelyum® exemplifies how science can create more responsible and effective solutions for Ecuadorian agriculture," stated Stephanie Valquinta, manager of the Agriculture Solutions – Ecuador business at BASF.
