EDEKA-WWF Banana Program for Sustainability

2025-07-11

EDEKA is launching BOAHNANE bananas, marked with the WWF panda logo, to promote eco-friendly farming and better labour conditions. For over a decade, EDEKA and WWF have collaborated to promote sustainable and socially responsible banana cultivation.

The joint banana program, which began in Ecuador and Colombia, has now expanded to Costa Rica and Cameroon. Approximately 80 specific measures are being implemented to enhance environmental protection and social standards on these farms. GUT&GÜNSTIG BOAHNANE bananas are now available in EDEKA stores. Carrying the WWF logo helps shoppers demonstrate their support for sustainability. In the early phase, bananas from participating farms may be blended with those from compensation farms that meet minimum sustainability standards, such as those certified by the Rainforest Alliance. These farms are expected to align with program goals by 2030 fully.

The initiative protects biodiversity, reduces irrigation water use, and promotes responsible use of fertilisers and pesticides to preserve soil health. It also aims to enhance farm workers' conditions through social security inclusion and health and safety training.

Customers can trace the origin of their BOAHNANE bananas using a code found on the fruit's sticker.
