Azorean Banana Gains Geographical Indication Status

2025-04-11

According to the regional government, the Azorean banana has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) designation as part of its Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status. An official order from the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Food, published in the Official Journal, confirms that, under EU Regulation No. 2024/1143, national protection is granted to the name "Banana dos Açores," effective April 3, 2025.

António Ventura, Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Food, stated that no national objections were raised against the classification. To ensure no global opposition to the designation, the process will now move to the European Commission.

This marks the first step toward achieving PGI status for the Azorean banana. The government and local producers have developed a specification manual highlighting the unique soil and climate of the Azores that shape the banana's distinctive characteristics.

The Azorean banana is known for its unique taste and texture compared to other bananas globally. "We aim to certify these differences through EU-recognized certifications such as PDO, PGI, and TSG," said Ventura.

The Azores already hold 10 community qualifications for agri-food products, including seven PDOs and three PGIs. The Azorean banana, now classified as PGI, will be the 11th qualification, with three additional PDOs under preparation. Ventura noted that these designations highlight local expertise and exceptional environmental conditions, benefiting producers and consumers.

The banana certification is nearing completion, while the other three products are still developing their manuals. Ventura emphasized that the banana's PGI status would boost its economic value and demand both regionally and across Europe.

The Azorean Agricultural Cooperative of Horticulturists announced plans to secure the PGI classification to promote sustainable growth and maintain product quality. Carlos Araújo, president of Frutaçor, affirmed that the goal is to register the Azorean banana as PGI to improve its visibility and appeal to customers who value its unique qualities.

Azorean bananas, belonging to Musa acuminata Colla and 'Dwarf Cavendish,' are grown in defined outdoor areas, mostly under rainfed conditions. Araújo added that the bananas are smaller, sweeter, and have a pleasant aroma, distinguishing them from other bananas globally.
