Morocco sets a record for banana imports
2025-04-04

Morocco has set a record for banana imports, as reported by EastFruit magazine. By the end of 2024, the country had imported over 36,000 tons of bananas, which is 28.8% more than the previous year and double the amount imported in 2022. This record level of imports has exceeded $18 million in costs.
Until 2023, Morocco primarily sourced its bananas directly from Ecuador and Costa Rica. However, in the past two years, the contribution of these countries to Morocco's import structure has decreased significantly, with a notable increase in supplies from Spain and Portugal. Spain and Portugal are among the largest banana producers in the EU and cultivate the same varieties grown in Morocco.
The banana season in Morocco spans from October to June, with peak imports occurring from July to October when local production is limited. According to FAOSTAT, banana production in Morocco in 2023 was 309,000 tons, a 7.5% decrease from 2022, primarily due to reduced cultivated areas. As a result, imports from Spain and Portugal have filled the gap left by the decline in local production.
Although Morocco exports bananas, the volume has been decreasing in recent years. In 2024, the country exported only 250 tons of bananas, down from 280 tons in 2023 to 460 tons in 2022.
Notably, in April 2025, a trade mission organized by an FAO/EBRD-led project in partnership with FoodEx Morocco will aim to connect Moroccan exporters with Southeast Asia, one of the fastest-growing regions for fruit and vegetable imports.
