According to a press release from the Kazakh president's office, on April 1st, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Slovenian President Natasa Pirc-Musar discussed the possibility of linking Slovenia's Koper Seaport (Luka Koper) with TITR.
President Natasa Pirc-Musar arrived in Kazakhstan for an official visit on March 31. During their discussions, Presidents Tokayev and Pirc-Musar agreed to integrate Koper Seaport into the TITR. They also tasked relevant agencies from both countries with implementing measures to enhance mutual trade.
Additionally, Kazakhstan expressed interest in Slovenia's expertise in water management and is eager to collaborate in this sector. The two presidents confirmed their commitment to joint projects in various areas, including mining, green energy, nuclear energy, digitalization and innovation, healthcare, and tourism. "To effectively realize the existing opportunities, I suggest intensifying the work of the Intergovernmental Commission and elevating its activities to a new level. One of our priority tasks is to expand contacts between the business communities of our countries. We also discussed the creation of a Kazakhstan-Slovenia Business Council," Tokayev stated. Koper Seaport (Luka Koper) is located in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea, connecting the markets of Central and Southeastern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Far East. The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) is an international transport corridor that runs through China, Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and extends to Turkey and European countries. The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is part of this corridor.
In 2024, cargo transportation via TITR saw a 60% increase, reaching 4.5 million tonnes, including 35,600 TEU containers transported between China and Europe—a 27-fold rise from the previous year. The target for 2025 is to handle 5.2 million tonnes, including 70,000 TEU containers.
