Orsero has signed a strategic alliance agreement with "Platano de Canarias," strengthening its position in the banana production chain in the Canary Islands. This agreement was established between Hermanos Fernández López, Orsero's Spanish company, and Cooperativas Unidas de La Palma, one of the largest cooperatives and agricultural producers in the Canary Islands and the biggest on the island of La Palma. The leading group in Mediterranean Europe, specializing in importing and distributing fresh fruit and vegetable products, announced this collaboration.
According to a statement, the agreement aims to "strengthen the bond between the two entities" and "enhance the entire value chain of Canary bananas." Based on last year's recorded volumes, this mutual commercial growth initiative could produce and distribute 280,000 tons of Canary bananas throughout the agreement, with a total value exceeding 300 million euros.
Thanks to this alliance, the more than 2,000 farmers represented by Cooperativas Unidas will have access to Orsero's Spanish infrastructure, which can ripen 135,000 tons of product annually. This also includes one of Spain's largest distribution networks, with a presence in the main ports of the peninsula and an international reach extending to Portugal, France, Italy, and Greece.
Additionally, Fernández will consolidate its management of more than 42,000 tons of IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) Canary bananas produced annually by members of the Cupalma cooperative, achieving a total commercialized volume of nearly 90,000 tons.
As a result, Fernández will hold a market share of about 20% of Canary banana production.
