US Food Manufacturers Seek Tariff Exemptions from Trump Administration

Companies such as PepsiCo, Conagra, and J.M. Smucker have requested tariff exemptions on imported ingredients essential to the food industry, including cocoa, coffee, spices, and tropical fruits. The Consumer Brands Association made this request in a letter.

The letter argues that these ingredients are not available in the US, and exempting them from tariffs would help protect domestic manufacturers while preventing increases in consumer costs. Tom Madrecki, the association's vice president of campaigns and special projects, stated that the request aims to initiate a dialogue with the Trump administration regarding the strategic implementation of these tariffs. John Faucher, director of investor relations at Colgate-Palmolive, acknowledged that the company is feeling the effects of these tariffs, mainly due to its production operations in Mexico. Trump's tariff measures on products from China, Canada, and Mexico are crucial for the food and consumer sector, which may face further price hikes after years of inflation.
