ZIM has joined "The Move to -15°C

2025-01-24

The Israeli carrier ZIM is now part of "The Move to -15°C" campaign, aligning itself with industry leaders such as Maersk, MSC, Hapag-Lloyd, Cosco, and DP World. This initiative aims to raise the standard temperature for frozen products from -18°C to -15°C, reducing energy consumption.

ZIM emphasises that this movement aligns perfectly with its vision of sustainable shipping, showcasing its fleet with advanced reefer containers and real-time temperature monitoring systems.

Launched in 2023, "The Move to -15°C" began with 11 members and grew to around 30 by November of the same year.

The coalition includes prominent players in logistics and transport, such as DP World, Maersk, Cosco, Blue Water Shipping, ONE, MSC, Kuehne+Nagel, Hapag-Lloyd, and Constellation Cold Logistics, alongside brands like Daikin and Nomad Foods. Recent additions to the coalition include Emirates, the UK supermarket chain Iceland, and Emergent Cold LatAm, a temperature-controlled logistics operator in Latin America. The alliance has also welcomed new members from trade associations and universities, including the British Frozen Food Federation, the Cold Chain Federation, and Wageningen University.

According to the organisers of "The Move to -15°C," the previous standard of -18°C for frozen products has been in place for about 100 years and is considered arbitrary. A study from Nomad Foods indicates that increasing the standard temperature to -15°C could yield 10% to 11% energy savings without compromising product safety, taste, or nutritional value. Additionally, research conducted by various universities, funded by DP World, estimates that this change could prevent the emission of 17.7 million tons of CO2 annually, equivalent to the emissions produced by 3.8 million cars.
