Fairtrade Introduces Living Income Reference Price Tool
2024-09-06
Fairtrade International has introduced a new Living Income Reference Price tool, expanding its suite of digital tools to assist companies in creating sustainable supply chains. This tool, available on the Fairtrade International website, simplifies the process for companies to determine the prices necessary to ensure living incomes and wages.
Users can search for Living Income Reference Prices by commodity or country using an interactive map and download reports detailing the factors and calculations behind each price. Additionally, the tool provides insights into Fairtrade's Living Income strategy, emphasising decent livelihoods as a core aspect of sustainability.
Fairtrade has developed over a dozen country- or region-specific Living Income Reference Prices through research and validation with farmers and local industry experts. The tool will also include Living Wage Reference Prices, with the first reference price for bananas launched in 2023. Fairtrade's 2021-2025 Global Strategy focuses on four strategic priorities: digitalisation for fairer supply chains, emphasising data, transparency, and traceability. In 2023, Fairtrade launched the Banana Dashboard, a comprehensive resource for cooperatives, traders, and retailers to learn about Fairtrade banana producers, the benefits of Fairtrade certification, and opportunities to enhance relationships and impact on issues like living wages and climate. Fairtrade plans to extend this type of dashboard to other key product areas.
