Peru: A variety of banana resistant to TR4 is planted in Piura

A few days ago, in the Peruvian region of Piura, the banana variety known as GAL, resistant to the ‘Fusarium’ TR4 fungus, developed by Raham Meristem from Israel, was presented. The fungus, which is deadly to banana plantations, has been affecting banana plantations, especially in northern Peru. Thanks to the Israeli company Raham Meristem, the arrival of the seeds of this new variety in our country was made possible.
Since 2018, this company has developed in its laboratories a variety of resistance to the fungus that has affected plantations in countries such as the Philippines, Colombia, Venezuela, and Peru. The goal was to create plants that could resist ‘Fusarium’ TR4.
The first trials of the resistant GAL variety began in the Philippines, in fields infested with ‘Fusarium’.
Last year, resistant GAL plants were also planted in La Guajira, Colombia, with excellent results, according to Asaf Diner, a representative of the Israeli company.
In Peru, after overcoming the barriers to entry into the country, the first seeds of GAL resistant to ‘Fusarium’ arrived in Piura on August 20th.
They were immediately planted in the greenhouses of Agronegocios Los Ángeles, the allied Peruvian company. “Now it’s time to conduct field tests and choose the best clone of resistant GAL to plant in Peru,” said Diner.
