South Korean banana imports from Vietnam increase

Agricultural imports from Vietnam to South Korea have seen a remarkable surge, with a 55% increase in the first half of this year, totalling US$164 million. This growth signifies Vietnam’s expanding role in the global agricultural market, with South Korea emerging as its second-largest agrarian trading partner, just behind China.

The most significant imports include bananas, mangos, and sesame seeds, with bananas experiencing a notable tripling in value. The rise in demand for Vietnamese produce is not limited to these items; there has also been a substantial increase in the shipments of dragon fruit, watermelon, shiitake mushrooms, durian, pineapple, and almonds. A Gia Lai-based banana export company has successfully penetrated major South Korean supermarkets, such as Lottemart, indicating a strong presence in the market.

Dang Phuc Nguyen, the general secretary of the Vietnam Fruits & Vegetables Association, points out the vast growth potential, considering South Korea’s banana market is worth $300 million annually.
