Is it wrong for Asprocan to set kg/ha for banana aid?

2024-08-09

The Association of Banana Producers of the Canary Islands (Asprocan) has rejected the non-legislative proposal approved by the Canary Islands Parliament, which sets a maximum of 65,000 kilos per hectare for aid to banana production. Asprocan considers this measure a "big mistake". In a statement, Asprocan points out that the Parliament's Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Committee, together with the councillor for the area, Narvay Quintero, approved this initiative with two amendments that divide the sector and violate the requests of the Banana Producers' Organisations of the Canary Islands.

NLP was passed despite including questionable data and a last-minute amendment without further consideration or knowledge of its impact. Asprocan regrets that this hasty action tries to dynamite the sector's unity.

Asprocan explains that it learned of the new amendments at the last-minute hours before the approval of the NLP and proposed a postponement to present data and objective arguments. However, demagogy and the desire to teach a lesson prevailed in the Commission. Adopting amendments affecting many producers and workers in the sector in just one hour was irresponsible, according to Asprocan. In addition, by ignoring the producer organizations, recklessness was committed.
