Ecuador: MAG's Policies in Support of Women in Agriculture
2024-08-09
Aiming to strengthen female participation in the agricultural sector, over 50 women from the provinces of Guayas, El Oro, Santa Elena, Los Ríos, and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas gathered for the dissemination of the Public Agricultural Policy for Rural Women (PAMUR). This event, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) through the Undersecretariat of Peasant Family Agriculture, was attended by women who contributed to the creation of the National Agricultural Strategy for Rural Women (ENAMIR) in the past. The women hope that their contributions will be integrated into PAMUR, which they believe will significantly benefit the nearly 3 million women living in rural areas of the country.
Gonzalo Alvarado, representing the MAG in Guayas, emphasized the importance of addressing the challenges faced by women due to gender inequality, especially those in rural areas with significant labour participation in agriculture. In Ecuador, 747,140 women work in agricultural production, of which 86.3% are not reimbursed, representing approximately 645,000 women. "From the MAG, the National Agricultural Strategy for Women is being implemented as a key instrument to promote gender equality in the sector," declared Alvarado. The purpose of the dissemination is to inform the producers about the benefits of PAMUR and how it will positively influence their productive development and overall well-being.
Alvarado also pointed out that one of the primary concerns is to ensure the sustainability of this process at the national level and its expansion to other sectors, given that the needs of rural communities and women are not limited to the agricultural field but cover multiple aspects. Therefore, he highlighted the need to elevate ENAMIR to an Intersectoral Public Policy, which will promote the coordination of efforts to close the specific gaps that affect this vulnerable population.
