Bolivia: Strengthening of banana and pineapple production

2024-07-05

The Bolivian Government has allocated Bs 16,067,722.06 to strengthen banana, plantain and pineapple crops in the tropical region of Cochabamba. This investment will directly benefit the municipalities of Villa Tunari, Shinahota, Puerto Villarroel, Entre Ríos and Chimoré.

The commitment was solidified by signing agreements between the Ministry of Rural Development and Lands (MDRyT), the National Fund for Integral Development (Fonadin), and the mayors of the benefiting municipalities. This collaboration underscores the significant role of these institutions in driving the region's agricultural development.

The agreements encompass a range of initiatives, including providing technological packages, establishing irrigation systems and drainage canals, and delivering training and technical assistance. Moreover, they place a strong emphasis on marketing and market access, with the aim of not only boosting production but also enhancing the quality and marketability of these products both domestically and internationally.

Ariel Conde, director of Fonadin, reaffirmed the Government's continued commitment to Bolivian farmers. "We will continue to work under the direction of our minister Santos Condori and President Luis Arce, so that Bolivian producers have access to the tools and resources necessary to improve production and marketing," he said.

This investment drives the national banana, plantain, and pineapple programs designed to increase production per hectare and open new international markets. In addition, the increase in domestic consumption is expected to generate higher economic income for producers and their families, thus strengthening the local economy.
