Fresh Del Monte Boosts Reforestation in Costa Rica

Fresh Del Monte inaugurated a new forest nursery in Sarapiquí, Costa Rica, on June 13 to cultivate native species and promote reforestation in the North and Caribbean regions.

The place will be called Vivero La Danta and dedicate 2,500 square meters of land to plant the seeds collected in the company's forest areas. The goal is for these trees to be subsequently donated to the owners and neighbours of the area, to donate at least 10,000 trees per year.

According to Michael Calderón, spokesperson for Fresh Del Monte: "For Fresh Del Monte, sustainability is our priority, and with the aim of enhancing the efforts we make in this area, we have founded our second forest nursery, this time on the San Cayetano farm, to support landscape restoration initiatives in the Caribbean and North regions of Costa Rica, but with the clear objective of increasing the delivery of trees to more communities in the country." Among the 27 species of trees that will be grown in this nursery are the Cedro Amargo, Carano, Cortez Amarillo, Mountain Almond, Jabillo, Mamón Chino, and Níspero, among others. Those interested in collaborating can make their donation requests through the form at http://surl.li/txgps, indicating the purpose of the trees and how many they need, among other requirements. Kelly Sánchez, Agricultural Environmental Engineer at Fresh Del Monte, added: "The seriousness of Fresh Del Monte in this project is backed by the results of our first forest nursery, located in El Peje de Volcán, Buenos Aires de Puntarenas. 31 years after its foundation, through its historical production and donation, it has contributed to the reforestation of more than 1,800 hectares with the donation of about 1.8 million trees." The nursery was inaugurated this week with the first donated trees, of which 115 were delivered to private owner Jessica Quesada
