Madeira: Banana Sales Increased by 18.7% in the First 4 Months of 2024

During the first four months of 2024, Madeira sold 6,623.5 tons of bananas, an increase of 1,045.1 tons, or 18.7%, compared to the same period in 2023. The Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development (DRADR) provided this data, which the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira released.

Of the total bananas sold, 80.5% were shipped, with the mainland being the primary destination. This slightly increased from the 78.7% shipped in the first quarter of 2023. All categories of bananas registered increases compared to the same period in 2023. Specifically, sales of extra-category bananas increased by 13.1%, the first category by 62.9%, and the second category by 12.4%.

It's worth noting that extra bananas accounted for a stable 78.6% of total banana sales during these four months. This is a slight de crease from 82.5% in the same period last year, representing a drop of 3.9 percentage points in the share of extra bananas. This indicates a balanced market, ensuring a secure environment for our stakeholders.
